On July 1st, 1955 Pastor Robert Harter was called by the Board of American Missions of the ULCA to serve as a mission developer in the Cedar Rapids SW area.
The first meeting was held at Hayes School, 1924 D St SW with 33 adults present. The first organization committee was formed. The name adopted for the new congregation was Hope Evangelical Lutheran Church. The first Sunday service was held at Hayes School on September 25th, 1955.
The Synod bought a parsonage at 180 22nd Ave SW. Three months after the organization, Hope Lutheran assumed the financial obligation and took over the deed to the property. The first congregational meeting was held in March 1956 to elect the first church council. On March 25th, 1956 recognition was given to 70 adults who signed the Charter Roll. They, together with 33 children, were declared the Hope Congregation.
On May 27th, 1956, ground was broken at 2600 J St SW for the House Chapel. Services were first conducted inside that building in September 1956. On November 25th, 1956 the House Chapel was dedicated.
Ground was broken for the church at 2736 Bowling St SW on March 4th, 1962 and was dedicated on October 7th, 1962. On May 3rd, 1981, a ground breaking ceremony was held for an expansion that included what is the Fellowship Hall, Kitchen, Office and Narthex. In 1995 another ground breaking ceremony was held for the expansion of what is now the current Sanctuary. The first service in the new Sanctuary was held on Easter Sunday - April 7th, 1996.
